Show Summary:
Our guest today is Shelly Miller, an American ex-pat living in London.
Shelly is a veteran ministry leader and a sought-after mentor on Sabbath Keeping. She leads the Sabbath Society, which is an online community of people who want to make rest a priority. The Sabbath Society’s a group of thousands of people who are declaring “I’m all in” when it comes to making rest realistic in our busy, crazy, frenetic, fast-paced world. And now it has turned into the very popular book Rhythms of Rest: Finding the Spirit of Sabbath in a Busy World.
Shelly is a dear friend of mine, and I have been a Sabbath Keeper for a long time. Shelly and I have bonded over everything in life, but mostly over Sabbath and hospitality and faith, and what it means to work those out in our everyday lives. And so you’re going to learn so much from her today. She is just a wealth of information.
And if you don’t really know what Sabbath is, that’s okay! Shelly is going to just take us through Sabbath Keeping 101 and share practical tips on why this is such a powerful rhythm in our daily lives and how it impacts our ability to offer hospitality.

Interview Quotes:
“I think more than how we Sabbath, how we rest, when we rest, and how long we rest, Jesus wants our eye contact. It’s about being with Him. Sabbath is about setting time apart to be with Jesus in a way that is different than you’re with Him during the other days of the week.”
–Shelly Miller
“ I think step number one [on how to Sabbath] is to be intentional and prepare ahead of time. I just find in the Sabbath Society over and over again, it’s the number one thing that keeps people persevering and making rest realistic in their lives. If you prepare ahead, chances are you’re going to Sabbath.”–Shelly Miller
“I can’t think of a better thing to do for us to share with our kids, spend time with Jesus, abide with Jesus once a week in a way that helps you really hear His voice and know how to walk.”
–Shelly Miller
“I think Sabbath and hospitality go hand in hand, because it’s all about being present, right? When we think about Sabbath, we’re thinking about being present and inviting the presence of God, making eye contact with God in a really intentional, focused way, in the same way we’re doing when we invite people into our lives at the table.”
–Shelly Miller
“Sabbath is as much a heart condition as it is a timeframe. And doesn’t that sound a lot like hospitality? That hospitality is as much a heart condition as it is something we do. It’s who we are.”
