Family Supper Matters
Does your cooking ever go in spurts? Mine does.
Yesterday, our seventeen-year-old son reminded me that I haven’t been cooking much lately. I could have spewed off all kinds of excuses for how busy we’ve been, but I chose to see the silver-lining: OUR TEENAGE SON REQUESTED MY COOKING! More importantly, he said he missed our family dinner time.
Years of family suppers flashed before my eyes. All the picky eater complaints and the tired, elbows propping heads up on the table meals suddenly seemed worth it.
Family supper matters. And, I’m grateful for the reminder from my teenage son.
Family supper: it’s not what’s on the plate, but who’s at the table.
Our family has been crazy busy lately. I suspect your family is, too. Here’s my plan to get back to the family dinner table.

5 Quick Tips for Family Supper
- Pick a night and stick to it.
- Chose a simple recipe (like Crock Pot Chicken Tinga or browse the Recipe Collection).
- Invite your family to supper. My family is always a bit shocked when I ask them to come to supper at our own table. Share that you miss spending time with them. Or, that you want more!
- Initiate conversation with engaging questions that avoid “yes” or “no” or “eh” responses.
- Share one encouraging thing about each family member.
- 2 lbs boneless skinless chicken
- 28-oz can whole peeled tomatoes
- 1 cup tomatillo (green) salsa
- 2-3 chipotle peppers + adobo sauce (from a can of chipotle peppers), to taste
- ½ cup sliced onions
- 2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Place chicken, tomatoes, salsa, chipotle peppers, adobo sauce, onion, garlic and bay leaf in slow cooker. Stir to combine. Cover and cook on low for 6 to 8 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours.
- Remove bay leaf. Shred chicken. Season with salt & pepper to taste.
- Serve with corn tortillas, top tostadas, or make quick and easy nachos.
